PEOPLE LEADERSHIP│ ATTITUDE │ SUBSTANCE

My conviction has become stronger over time: our working world needs to bring substance back into focus and we need to pay far more attention to it.

We spend a great deal of time talking about visibility and the consequences of leadership. Far less often do we talk about the substance from which leadership actually emerges.

That substance is not defined by an individual's leadership style alone.

More often than not, it is systemic. The reality behind the scenes of an organization; its structures, incentives, power dynamics, and culture shapes the way leadership is ultimately practiced.

This is the layer we should be paying attention to because it determines how people are actually led.

The leadership we see publicly is often closely tied to presentation and personal branding. It tells us surprisingly little about how leadership looks once the cameras are off and LinkedIn is closed.

Organizations do not achieve meaningful results because of their image.

They achieve them because of their substance.

That is why I believe leadership needs greater depth again.

Great leadership is neither a personality trait nor a communication strategy.

It is a demanding discipline that requires expertise, judgment, and continuous practice before it is entrusted with the responsibility of leading people.
